From the northwest to southwest, Costa Rica has a coastline of 300km (185 miles). At the countries narrowest point, the distance between the Pacific and the Caribbean is only about 120km (75 miles).

Mount Chirripo is 3,819 meters (12,530 feet) and is Costa Rica's highest point. Two of the most popular volcanoes in the country, which also have roads going to the very top are Irazú at 3,432 meters & Poas at 2,704 meters.

Costa Rica land area is 51,060 sq. km or .03% of all the land on earth. We are physically small, but our biodiversity is immense, with almost 6% of planet earth.

Costa Rica takes preservation seriously, with almost 27% of the land being national parks & reserves which cover 13,786 sq. km. There are 28 national parks, 58 wildlife refuges, 32 protected zones, 15 wetland areas, 11 forest reserves and 8 biological reserves as well as 12 other conservation regions that protect the distinctive and diverse natural habitats found in our home.

Home to a massive amount of plants and trees totaling more than 10,000 species, 850 indigenous and migrant birds, 205 species of mammals, over 35,000 species of insects, 160 species of amphibians, 220 species of reptiles, and around 1,000 species of fresh and saltwater fish.
